Anyone with horses know anything about Strongid C??
Wow this is a really good deal! I would grab at that. Where and how are you getting it? I'd really like to know. I kept my horses on Strongid C before at my last barn that had that program and I love the stuff, it kept my horses completely worm free and me worry free. Plus the insurance gave me a piece of mind. I had to pay $30 a month to have my horse given Strongid C daily, so you're getting a REALLY good deal if it includes vaccines biannually. I like daily dewormers, and from what I've heard theres nothing better than Strongid C. Its especially great if your horse doesn't like to be paste wormed, as they only need to be pasted by the vet twice a year. Jump on the deal and enjoy it, it'll be one less thing you'll have to worry about for your horse, and will let you focus on other things, like enjoying them!
Reply:That sounds like a great deal to me. Strongid C is pretty expensive. If your horse is somewhat prone to colic, I would go with the deal.

It is a daily wormer. Some people like it some don't. Personally, I do not because you do not need to deworm every day. Plus I do not like giving medicines daily. There have been studies that prove it has no ill effects, but I still don't want to do it. I know 10 or so people who are on Strongid C though, and depending on the parasite loads in your pasture, it may or may not make a huge difference.

Even if you do give Strongid C, you also need to give an all around dewormer such as Equimax in the spring and fall since it doesn't cover every type of parasite or worm.
Reply:I have heard some really good reviews about it. I have never used it but I know someone who has. They really loved it.

Here are some websites to help! :

Reply:Depends on your horse, and what sort of work you do. My horses get yearly vaccinations, and then i worm them myself, To protect them against colic, because horses out here get sand colic, we feed psyllium. and it works amazing. :) you can also feed bran. Make sure you know how to feed the supplements you choose.
Reply:It is necessary to deworm your horse, don't get me wrong, but worming regimens aren't really necessary. A healthy horse needs to be wormed once, maybe twice a year.

Wormers are very harsh on their gut. It kills the good and the bad bacteria. Also, it does tear the gut wall up quite a bit, which often results in colic. A more gentle wormer is Panacur.

You might look into herbal dewormers. I use one called Herbal Tonic from the Dynamite marketing company, but there are tons out there. Herbal wormers are wonderful, as they are good for their whole body. If a horse is healthy, worms don't like to live there. They are only attracted to more unhealthy horses.

The $5000 insurance for colic is a good deal - you'll need it with all that wormer ;-). But insurance is always a good idea, even if you have a healthy horse. Colic is very fickle and likes to show up for no reason.

In the end, do whatever you are comfortable with. Follow YOUR instincts, not your vet's. Honestly, vets, friends, and riding instructors are wonderful, but they have been known to be wrong.
Reply:Strongid C is just a pyrantel dewormer for your horse. It is necessary to deworm your horse every 2 to 3 months. You should rotate through dewormers eg. ivermectin, pyrantel, equimax (in the spring) etc... This will provide your horse with thorough protection from worms.
Reply:I purchased a similar plan from my vet, and in my opinion it was the best thing that ever happened. About 10 years ago my quarter horse coliced and had sever dehydration because the barn workers had not checked his salt block or water levels (that is a whole other story), but when he got better the vet recomended this plan. I have been very very happy with the strongid c, and have not had a problem since, but it is still nice to know that I have that insurance if something does happen again. If you work it out the price is not much more than all of the stuff you get separatly, and the insurance is just a nice bonus of comfort. I strongly recomend you join this plan.
Reply:Strongid is a wormer. It does not kill all worms horses get so your program needs to use medication for bots and others as well. And yes, I wish this was offered in my area. Colic surgery alone could very well cost over that amount. I would also though like to add that I have had horses since 1969 and have never had a case of colic yet. Regardless at that price, yes, get it.
