The back half of our house gets hot during the summer. Not including a.c. and double pain windows, what?

what other major expenses must be considered when it comes to improving the cooling and heating of your home?

The back half of our house gets hot during the summer. Not including a.c. and double pain windows, what?
Well, some of these answers touch on a couple of the issues.

Planting deciduous shade trees is a good strategy. They will shade your house during the summer (and not just the windows--they will shade and cool the whole house), and allow sunshine in during the winter.

Insulated windows and walls are always a good idea, especially the way energy prices are.

Shades at your windows (not necessarily room darkening--any type of shade will reduce the heat) will help if you keep them drawn.

A ceiling fan will help circulate air. Even if it doesn't actually cool the air, moving air feels cooler on the body. A ceiling fan may also increase the efficiency of your central air.

Also, use the natural cooling power of an evening breeze. Open the windows at night, and if needed, use fans to move the air. Early in the morning, shut down the windows and trap the cool air inside.

So, outside of AC and windows, the expenses to consider are fairly small. Good luck cooling down!
Reply:increasing insulation in the walls and attic would be a good idea for heating and air conditioning. adding trees and other shade in the yard would be a benifit also.
Reply:Shade trees?

Reply:try this , install some blinds , might help .

it does work for me
Reply:i agree with shade giving trees. trees are a great thing to have around anyways(besides leaves) try a golden maple tree. we got one a few years ago, they grow supper fast, like 3 ft a year when they are young

unfortunatly, they only last like 20 years because they grow too big too fast and cant support themselves

dogwood trees grow slow, but bloom and blossom whith the most beautiful flowers every spring. pluss, the female ones drop these red spiky fruits every fall(also good looking) and the males grow red buds in the fall.

there are so many different kinds of trees, you can easly find the one that is right for you
Reply:If you mean to cool it down in summer... you can try insulating it better, or installing central air...or installing room by room thermastats....black out reflective curtains...a lot of fans for airflow..you can try the in the window models that blow both in and out...for heating you could try and under the floor cooling system....if you have a lot of windows but a bunch of fishtanks or fountains right by them so that the hot air will cool some as it blows in...
