where i live 36 is not cold. 5 above is cold and 5 below is getting rough.

there are a lot of questions to ask about your exposure to the cold, for example, will you be walking in it, is the area wet, subject to wind and stuff like that.

i train soldiers how to survive in the environment that they go to war in. Email me and lets discuss this and I can offer you better options than blindly having you spend money that you do not need to spend
Reply:dress in layers, if you get to warm, you can always remove clothes, but if you get to cold, it is kind of hard to add more clothes when you don't have any.
Reply:yes, Magnetic is right, it depends what you're doing.

I'm from sunny South Oz too but at the moment I am working in Changchun China where the maximum temperature for the last 4 weeks has been below zero C. ( you're right, it is difficult to fathom until you're in it) Even when it was 2 above zeroC, I needed thermal underwear, several layers and I bought a feather coat here (no such thing back home). Most of the cities have homes, shops etc that are well heated so if you're inside you'll be fine, it's just the short trip to the car or other building that freezes your face! Depends where you're going but if, like here, you are likely to get 'Siberian' wind then you'll need a hat and a scarf! (or two)

I can give more detailed suggestions if it's any help to you
Reply:Thermal underwear is essential long-sleeved t-shirts and long-legged under-panties (leggings), usually made from special fibres but the cheap ones are cotton (t-shirt fabric). I'm used to this kind of weather and wear nothing but a sweatshirt, but for someone from a tropical climate I recommend wearing at least one strappy-top or undershirt (1st layer), long-sleeved t-shirt (2nd), sweatshirt (3rd) and jacket (4th). If you are really cold you could wear another short-sleeved t-shirt and 2 sweatshirts. For the bottom it is long underpants (cotton leggings or pantyhose or long-johns) and thick, heavy jeans or skiing suit pants.

You'll definitely need boots and a decent jacket - but it is always best to buy when you are there as the choice is more varied and the price is lower.
